Katsu King, South Yarra

Katsu King was originally come from Europe. The concept is the Japanese French fusion food in Japan.
This restaurant is the only specialized katsu restaurant in South Yarra and situated just 1-2 minutes walking distance from South Yarra station, what a perfect location?
Public transport: Tram – YES!, Train – YES! Toorak Road 🙂

The number of people passing this restaurant is enormous which is the main benefit reaped by this newly opened restaurant.
They do have the colorful flashing brand on their window and everyone can hardly miss this restaurant as soon as they get off from South Yarra Station.

There were 2 sections: downstairs (considerably small – used mainly for take away), upstairs which had plenty
The interior design was modern, funky and cheerful dominated with yellow color.
The vibe and atmosphere was pretty good.
The customer staffs were friendly and nice.

We bought online coupon received, the deal was $19 for any 2 of chicken ($1 surcharge for pork and $2 surcharge for beef) katsu sets with
2 drinks (soft drink, bottle of water other than that would be additional $1.00 surcharge).
We reckoned that was really good deal 🙂 Yayyy!

Anyway, we ordered:
– Chicken Katsu Ramen with drink for $9.50 **using online deal coupon
The regular price for chicken katsu ramen is $12.00 + drink, you’ll be looking to spend between $14.00 – $16.00.
The chicken katsu served hot, crispy and crunchy in the separate plate and the presentation of the ramen was pretty good.
The ramen noodle was perfectly cooked.
Unfortunately, the ramen soup base wasn’t too strong, lack depth in flavour compared to other ramen bars.
We could barely taste the broth from the ramen soup base.
Also, the chicken cutlet was too thin for the katsu, thus the crumbed overcame the overall taste of the original chicken cutlet.

– Pork Katsu Don set with miso soup with drink for $10.50 (+$1.00 for pork)
The regular price for chicken katsu ramen is $14.00 + drink, you’ll be looking to spend between $16.00 – 18.00.
Pork Katsu was well fried; It was served fresh, crunchy and still hot with generous portion of salad with fantastic peanut dressing.
This one was better compared to the chicken katsu, the portion was generous as well.
There was one thing that we less enjoyed having this one as the rice was slighly watery as it came from the egg, vegetables, and condiments put on top of the rice.
We reckoned if it wasn’t too watery, this one would be a perfect dish.

They do have 3 different dipping sauces: original, garlic sauce and black pepper sauce.
We loved the garlic sauce but not the original and black pepper sauce because from our opinion the original one was too sweet and black pepper sauce didn’t go well with the katsu.

Overall, we still had a good time having dinner here and we’ll be back to try other stuffs.
Hope the next time we’re coming they’ve made some improvements 🙂

Taste: 3.0
Service: 3.0
Price: 4.5 (Good deal using coupon)
Speed: 2.5

Yay: Pork Katsu Don set was great, garlic dipping sauce was really good, generous portion
Nay: Rice in the Pork Katsu Don was watery, ramen soup base was tasteless
