Who Is Bunker Spreckels, Elwood

We are lucky enough to win another give away to 2 free main dishes and drinks.
We used this opportunity to review the newly opened cafe in Elwood, Saint Kilda – Who Is Bunker Spreckels.

If you type on google search wiki “Bunker Spreckels”, you’ll notice that it was a nickname
from Adolph Bernard Spreckels III and he was an American surfer and an early pioneer of surfboard design.

The newest Elwood cafe inspired from him, used his nickname as the cafe’s name.
Moreover the main theme of this cafe is also about the surfing world with a surfboard up on the wall.
If you’re curious enough to figure it out how he looks like, you just simply visit this cafe and pick your seat
in the corner.
You’ll see the cool wallpaper picturing “Bunker Spreckels”.

The cafe located in the prime location, heart of Elwood.
The interior design of the cafe was minimalist, fresh and bright.
You can enjoy the sun as they have the outdoor table or inside.

When we came, we were served by the friendly customer staffs.
The vibe and atmosphere in this cafe is absolutely brilliant, cosy as soon as you sit down, you don’t want to move.

We ordered:
– Spreckel Fritters (Zucchini and corn fritters, carrots puree, smashed avocado, poached eeg and relish with smoked salmon) for $19.50.
It is the classic dish that you can’t go wrong with because of the great combination of the avocado, smashed avocado and relish.
The plating was simple but still looked pretty.
The fritters were well fried served in warm and little bit crunchy from outside but it was fluffy inside;
The taste of corn fritters was absolutely fantastic; It was balance and well seasoned.
This cafe totally nailed it and it was one of the best Corn Fritters we’ve ever tried.
We’re happy to recommend this dish.

– Point Break Pancakes (Ricotta pancakes, banana, vanilla ice-cream, mixed nuts, fresh berries, persian fairy floss, passionfruit) for $15.00.
The presentation wasn’t outstanding but the taste was really good, especially the vanilla ice cream was the star.
The pancakes were well cooked and it wasn’t dry. The taste of pancake wasn’t too sweet either which made even better.
Unfortunately, ice cream served was too small 😦 and the fact that the ice cream was slightly melting when served which made the small ice cream even smaller ooohhhh nooo!!!!
Anyway, either serving bigger size of ice cream or 2 scoops of ice cream would make this dish absolutely perfect.
In the end, the last stack of pancake was lonely without companion of ice cream.

– Choccoco (Banana, peanut butter, coconut milk, rice milk, cacao, maca, buckwheat, ice – smoothies) for $8.00.
– From The Earth (Banana, avocado, cinnamon, mango, maca, spinach, bee pollen, ice, coconut water, water) for $8.00.
Both smoothies were slightly lighter compared to the smoothies that we’ve had in other cafes;
The taste wasn’t that strong as such we wondered what’s inside the smoothies if we didn’t check out the ingredients in the menu;
Choccoco was the winner compared to “From The Earth” as it had much richer and stronger taste.

Overall, we had a good time in this cafe, great food and awesome place to hang out.
Unfortunately, it took a while for the food to come out but it was still worth the wait.
We’ll definitely come back and bring our mates 🙂
