What a funky name chosen “Curry Smuggler”, I reckon it’s so catchy.
It’s a semi fine dining Indian restaurant situated the busy street, Brunswick Street in Fitzroy.
Surely, everyone won’t have any hard time to find this restaurant as it’s easily accessible by public transport or private vehicles.
As soon as we arrived, we’re welcomed by the friendly customer staff.
The vibe and ambience was very relaxing with stylish and modern interior design without leaving behind the authenticity of Indian culture.
Customer service was amazing, friendly and so attentive.
They’re also very knowledgable and very helpful of their food.
No worries for the first timer if you have no idea what to order, they’re willing to help you to decide which dishes you wanna go based on your preferences.
We ordered and suggested by the friendly staff in the following lists:
– Mango Lassi
The mango lassi was nicely presented with the gradation color from the Mango syrup.
It was thick and had rich taste, the mango flavour was very strong.
– Daaku Di Tangri (Smuggler’s) Drumsticks
(Drumstick of chicken with a core of lamb mince marinated in mild tandoori spices and yogurt)
The chicken drumsticks were perfectly cooked and well seasoned, inside you’ll find a lamb mince marinated which also cooked perfectly.
If you’re really hungry, this would be a perfect entree as it was served generously with two big chicken drumsticks.
The protein is very tender and not oily.
It’s not the usual Indian starter food and it’s worth trying – good value and quality.
– Tandoori Prawns
(Prawn marinated in the yogurt with Indian spices served with Kachumbar salad)
The Tandoori Prawns were also nicely cooked and had balance taste.
The taste even got better when you dipped with their home made dipping mint.
Unfortunately, the prawns were slightly dry, but it was still really great one.
– Tawa Chicken (Smoke flavoured traditional curry served with smoked onions and capcicum on hotplate)
The chicken was cooked perfectly and served generously in hotplate.
It’s not a typical curry, it had slightly smokey flavoured but had delicate taste at the same time.
You’ll find many herbs used in Tawa chicken mixed with smoked onions and capcicum, but everything mixed perfectly and balance.
– Paneer Butter Cream (Cottage Cheese)
It’s a marinated in tandoori spices then cooked in Tandoor oven later tossed in tomato, delicate spices and nut cream sauce.
This one is more like the vegetarian version of butter chicken.
The only different between Paneer Butter Cream and Butter Chicken was the smoked flavour from the marinated chicken.
– Lamb Saag
This one was the absolute champion, we had no idea what’s inside the green curry sauce.
The chef did some magic to make this dish perfectly done.
The lamb had delicate taste, tender, smooth and juicy.
Though it was served in a small pot, but the lambs were generously served.
Everything came into perfection, you won’t be able to find this dish in the menu because it was on special menu.
– Garlic Naan
Served in warm, perfectly made and not oily / greasy!
Overall, we had a great time to dine in this Indian restaurant and really glad to be invited to try their amazing dishes.
The dishes ordered all of their curry dishes were stunning and absolutely fascinating.
It’s one of the best Indian curry we’ve ever tried.
We’ll definitely add this Indian restaurant in our favorite places to go for a good food 🙂
