Tahina Bar, Fitzroy just recently opened following the successful main branch in Northcote.
This cute little bar brings the additional collection of Fitzroy restaurants/bars.
Tahina offers the vegetarian Israeli street food with a gourmet twist, delicious superfood smoothies and hand made natural ice cream.
Tahina is Roy and Nat’s shared dream to a humble, warm and special place where people enjoy home style Israeli food that will leave you feeling totally nourished and satisfied.
We’re excited to be invited to have our first experience of Israeli cuisines.
You won’t miss this bar if you’re around Fitzroy because of their stand out unique logo and blue main door.
The restaurant/bar looks very clean mainly with the blue/white color themes and wooden tables.
From outside as soon as you enter the restaurant, it looks small (front section) but when you start walking down passing the kitchen,
they do have the outdoor spot with cosy heaters installed on the wall and cute fairy lights.
We’re welcomed by Roy (the head chef/co-owner), who was working on that day.
The restaurant/bar was very clean and minimalist.
The customer service was great, attentive and knowledgeable.
The vibe and atmosphere were stunning and cosy with the slow background music playing.
Our food journey started with the following outstanding dishes:
– Red Falafel
It’s a mixed with chilli and red peppers. Hummus, israeli salad, pickled cabbage and tahini.
The falafel was perfectly deep fried and had an appealing color.
The falafel wasn’t dry and flavourful with Tahina homemade spice.
It was served warm, crunchy from outside and from the inside it was soft, tender and succulent.
The israeli salad served on the side was perfectly seasoned, rich and had balance taste, it gave you a freshness touch from this dish.
– Shashuka Platter (Red)
It’s served with israeli salad, spicy green salad, pickled cabbage, hummus tahini and pita bread with two free range eggs.
Note: if you’re Vegan, you can swap the eggs for eggplants.
The Shashuka had really rich and flavourful taste.
The eggs were perfectly cooked, they were not overcooked.
Shashuka Platter generously served with israeli salad on the side and pita breads with hummus tahini for the dipping.
If you love little bit spicy touch of the food, you must order the Shashuka Platter (Red); It had a mild spicy taste perfectly blended in the Shashuka sauce.
What a perfect dish to order in Winter time right?
Definitely, it’s a recommended dish to order when you’re visiting Tahina Bar.
– Vegan “Carrot” Hot Dog
Black smoked bun with pickled cabbage, spiced cured carrot, tahini amba mustard and sweet tomato sauce sprinkled with sweet potato chips.
Vegan “Carrot” Hot Dog was nicely presentation (you won’t notice that’s the carrot) and creatively made.
The black smoked bun had soft texture and very tender.
The spiced cured carrot was perfectly made, it was really soft but not soggy.
It was well seasoned with the light sweet taste, the sour taste came from the pickled cabbage under the carrot.
On top of Vegan “Carrot” Hot Dog, there were sprinkled sweet potato chips; They’re crunchy and crispy.
– Roasted Eggplant
It’s served with hummus, half a roasted eggplant, zaatar kale chips and tahini.
We reckon it’s a creative and thoughtful dish to put zaatar kale chips on top of Roasted Eggplant.
The zaatar kale chips were very crunchy and gave you smokey taste.
Roasted eggplant was well seasoned, not oily and had balance taste.
I’m not a big fan of eggplant but this one was really good!
Overall, we had a great time and we’re impressed by the delicious Israeli dishes made by Tahina Bar.
Note: We’d like to say thank you to Roy, Nat and Tahina’s team for the invite and great service.
