Hakoya Ramen is a newly opened ramen bar in Lonsdale Street, the location is perfect surrounded by the busy apartment blocks “Upper West Side”.
They introduce a unique style of ramen which is the soupless ramen.
While we’re around that area yesterday, we went there to have the ramen experience in Hakoya.
We loved the interior design, it’s very Japanese authentic and a typical ramen bar style in Japan.
We reckon they need more staffs on the floor because there was only one lady who’s working on the floor doing everything.
She was juggling many tasks, she’s taking the customer order and sending the food at the same time.
We didn’t get good impression on the customer service as she left us while we’re asking about the ramen to serve the food couple times.
Anyway, we ordered:
– Spicy Tonkotsu ramen (spicy level 2, spring onion and hard noodle texture) for $14.50.
The soup broth was light but still flavourful. If you love slightly light soup broth, you’ll definitely love their ramen.
The noodle was perfectly cook. We ordered spicy level 2 and it’s enough to give sensational of spiciness in the ramen bowl.
The cha-shu was nicely grilled and seasoned. It was tender, soft and had rich taste.
There was only one disappointment of this ramen, they only gave 1 small cha-shu in this ramen bowl for this value.
For the same price and similar taste, other places gave more generous portion than this.
– Mazemen “soupless ramen” (spring onion, normal noodle texture) for $14.90.
It’s a Taiwanese-inspired ramen style with spicy minced pork, spring onion, fresh garlic chive, yolk, seasoned seaweed, garlic, sesame seeds and kombu vinegar on the side.
How to eat the Mazemen??
1. Break yolk, then mix it all together with the special sauce on the bottom.
2. Finish 1/3 of noodles, then add a little portion of kombu vinegar.
We’d say, this ramen style is more like a ‘Taiwanese Tan Tan noodle’ style of ramen.
The taste was beautiful as you could taste a combination and rich of different flavour.
Sweet, sour and savoury compliment each other.
The spicy minced pork was generously served and the taste was really nice.
Loved this Mazemen “soupless ramen”.
Overall, they do a good ramen, unfortunately little bit pricey by looking at the meat served on Tonkotsu ramen.
Yay: Mazemen “soupless ramen”
Nay: Customer service, pricey
