Every once in a while the team at WhatEpiEats gets invited to something special, and when our invite reads “Tuna Cutting Show” you know it’s going to be something to look forward to.
Located in the midst of the Chadstone shopping capital, Marae Izakaya stands out with its modern and luxurious sushi train restaurant.
Walking in, we were greeted with a large fresh Australian tuna spanning easily close to 2 meter.
An assortment of blades held by the chef dressed in traditional Japanese garb was definitely a sight to behold.
As the crowd continues to pile in, we were greeted with delicious looking canapes – from fresh oysters to chili mayo prawns.
Of particular note is their spiced renkon chips with mashed avo and crab dip definitely worth a try!
Our MC did a great job of making the show exciting with quizzes about tuna and endless jokes involving the audience.
The chef explained each and every part of the tuna as he proceeded to expertly sliced and diced the fish into sashimi worth pieces. It’s amazing to see just how many different variants there are to a tuna from its prized belly “otoro” to the leaner red meat “akami”.
Tasting the Tuna was definitely a delight with freshly cut melt in your mouth sashimi. Be warned though for those sensitive noses like me, there is definitely a strong fishy taste to each bite.
Our tuna was served in a number of different ways, lending to the creativity of the team at Marae Izakaya. From the entrée of Tuna-Avo salad to the main course of grilled tuna steak in soy sauce.
The texture of the tuna steak was amazingly firm and spot on unlike many fish-based dishes.
We also loved the dessert served which was a plum yuzu jelly which gave a satisfying sweet and sour end to our feast.
We’d like to thank the team at Marae Izakaya for inviting us and with the lingering taste of the fresh sushi in our mouths – we would definitely be back!
Note: We’d like to say thank you to Marae Izakaya’s team for having us.
