Klang & Co, Hawthorn (Invited)

Klang & Co is a cute and humble looking Malaysian restaurant located just in the alley-access (Don Arcade) GlenFerrie Station. You hardly miss this restaurant, just simply find a yellow/black outdoor table.
@whatepieats is so glad to be invited and experience a different part (Klang City) of Malaysian food.

Hawthorn is one of the most popular suburb in Melbourne, this suburb is surrounded by offices, Hawthorn universities (good traffic for the retail / restaurant business) and perfect East suburb to live in.
We came on the weekend and not during lunch time (off peak), expecting to have a slightly quiet time when we do the review.
Surprisingly, we noticed that this place was almost full all the time and non stop take-away meals coming from third party delivery agency.

We’re warmly welcomed by Sunny, the owner. He was really friendly, not to us but to other customers; If you have a chance to visit Klang & Co, you’ll notice that they’re using the industrial interior design; That’s odd why?
While waiting for the food, the owner told us little bit story bout the shop.
History lesson begins … LOL – Just kidding!

Anyway, Klang City (Malaysia) used to be an industrial area that’s the whole idea of the theme of their interior design.
Also, since it’s an industrial area, they needed a dish that’s hearty, quick and filling; That’s where the Hokkien style of ‘Bak Kut Teh’ originally comes from.
Here @Klang & Co, you will be gladly experiencing and indulging your tummy with their rich original Hokkien style Bak Kut Teh (dark soy).
Ohhhh they won the interior design award few year ago!! Congratulation….

On that day, we ordered:

  • Char Kue Tiaw
    It’s a super delicious Char Kue Tiaw cooked using the wok and it was also generously served. You’ll be drooling just by looking at this dish and smelling how fragrance it was.
    On top you’ll get the generous portion of Chinese sausage pork, crispy pork fat and prawns.klang_n_co-3
    Honestly, I couldn’t stand to try this dish while Miss.Epi was busy taking other photos – ha ha ha…
    Anyway, the noodle was perfectly cooked and everything was perfectly executed.
    It wasn’t a rocket science dish but it was delivered perfectly by Klang & Co;
    It’s definitely dish that you MUST try!klang_n_co-4

    • Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang
      (Jasmine Rice cooked in Coconut Milk topped with Malaysian Curry with Boneless Chicken / Beef Rendang and Hard Boiled Egg)
      When it comes to Malaysian restaurant, what can go wrong with Nasi Lemak? It’s more like a benchmark where you go to Malaysian restaurant.
      We’ve had high expectation from this Malaysian restaurant and definitely hit our mark.

      Beef rendang was perfectly cooked; It was soft and tender.
      The beef curry had a balance and rich taste full of mixed spice.
      Hands down to the kitchen team and well prepared! We could say that this Nasi Lemak was one of the best Nasi Lemak we’ve ever visited @Malaysian restaurant.
      Ahh worth to mention that the sambal was also nice, it wasn’t too spicy 🙂

    • Bak Kut Teh with Hainanese Rice
      Imagine that others dishes were well executed and what about their signature dish.
      Absolutely fantastic and MUST try this Bak Kut Teh. The hokkien style Bak Kut Teh soup was rich but not too strong;

      The dish was perfectly paired with their hainanese rice, I’d love to come back and revisit this restaurant when we’re around Hawthorn.

  • Apong Balik
    Finally, we’ve had the Apong Balik – it’s a traditional hawker style dessert in Malaysia; We call it “Kue Apem” in Indonesia.
    We simply loved this Apong Balik to end our food journey.
    It’s crispy outside and full of crunchy nuts in the inside! It wasn’t too sweet either, so you won’t be struggling to finish up their dessert.
