Bao Wei Lao is a traditional Chinese Sichuan hot pot buffet venue located in 1062 Dandenong Road, Carnegie. You hardly miss this place as it’s located in the main road. The restaurant is well decorated, clean and spacious.
We’re glad to be invited by Bao Wei Lao’s team to experience the hot pot buffet.
Here at Bao Wei Lao buffet, you have two main sections: one is for hotpot where you can find meats (lamb, beef), vegetables, mushrooms, noodles and Seafood. Another one is for hot food / a la carte buffet selections.

Hotpot
There are 6 different hot pot soup base that you can choose:
- Traditional Spicy Butter Soup Base
- Mushroom Soup Base
- Pork Bone Soup Base
- Medicine Soup Base
- Ox Tail and Tomato Soup Base
Miss. Epi opted for Traditional Spicy Butter Soup Base – Medicine Soup Base (half / half) and Mr. Epi opted for Pork Bone Soup Base – Ox Tail and Tomato Soup Base (half / half).
Turned out that Mr.Epi kept stealing food from Miss. Epi’s soup base as it worked really well for the hot pot.
We reckon if you’re a big fan of sour flavour, you can opt with the Ox Tail and Tomato Soup Base.
In the a la carte hot food section, you’ll find an array of Chinese food options such as: Yang Chow Fried Rice, SiChuan Spicy Chicken, Tripe Pieces, Lentinus Edodes Chicken, Pork Leg, Fish Head.
Our highlights are SiChuan Spicy Chicken and Fish Head. They’re surprisingly tasty and seasoned well. Others were either under seasoned or over seasoned.
There was also Dimsum food on this section such as, Hakao, Sio May, Porn Bun, Egg Custard and others.
They also cover light food selections, such as Fried Glutinous Rice, Colonel Place Chicken (Chicken Nugget), Spring Rolls, Japanese Fried Prawn, BBQ Peking Duck, Fish Cake, Glutinous Rice Cake, Home Style Pancake, Pumpkin Cake.
We’d recommend you to try their Fried Glutinous Rice, BBQ Peking Duck and Japanese Fried Prawn. The taste was not outstanding but they were pretty decent.
The Peking Duck was slightly dry, but still not bad and the taste was pretty good.

Bao Wei Lao
Overall, it’s pretty good buffet place to hang out with friends and family knowing that they charge a reasonable price for this quality of food. You won’t get a Top class A grade food, but they’re still enjoyable.
Note: We’d like to say thank you to Bao Wei Lao’s team for having us.
